help on understanding yoga as a methodology for imprinting

Robert Anton Wilson says the following about imprinting
1) happens at a specific critical time
2) the brain seeks out some sensory stimuli to imprint. For instance, It looks for the person with the tits, when you are born.

He then goes on to say that you can re-imprint using yoga over a period of time. How would someone know what time into the yoga practice the brain will be looking for an imprint. For instance, say im going on doing yoga for a while, and then someone turns of the tv and Broke Back Mountain is on. Based on what I have gathered from RAW. I could spontaneously become gay LOL.

I have been doing a meditation technique that appears to have the same effects as yoga. I have noticed gradual freedom in C1-C4. I have not noticed instantaneous changes. I have not noticed any sort of re-imprinting. Just more flexibility from my old, existing imprints.

There are clear gaps in my knowledge on Imprinting. Could you please clarify? Could you please recommend resources that could fill in the gaps in my knowledge?

Music and metaprogramming

I think listening to music might be an effective tool for metaprogramming.

I am almost always listening to music. Psychedelic rock, indie music, electronic, experimental, world/spiritual music, reggae, etc. As my musical tastes get more and more diverse, I feel as if I can relate with and sympathize with others better. I know it might seem as if it was from simply having more in common, but it feels beyond that, as if we traveled the same path or something. The process is gradual, but it definitely helps develop the following circuits:

2: Emotional: I've experiences many emotions I usually do not experience, or cannot even describe, from music of different sorts. Having a wide array of emotional experiences means I can generally control them better.

3: Symbolic: I've only gotten into guitar recently, but mathematical intelligence and musical intelligence often go hand-in-hand. Plus there was a study that correlated higher test grades with listening to classical music when studying as opposed to not. Listening to music makes us more aware of space-time patterns.

5: Somatic: everyone who has listened to music stoned should relate to this. Even if not, listening to a favorite album at the right moment leads to a great high.

7: Neurogenetic: world music and awareness of music history is comparable to the awareness of hominid evolution.

Since LSD and music, I've been able to induce a visualizer-esque effects when I close my eyes and listen to certain music. The light that enters in the darkness forms colors and patterns that move to the music, sometimes if I know the lyrics/meaning of the song it might influence the visualization. For example, an autumnal song about trees might feature a spinning tree with leaves changing color and form, with other colors encircling the tree.

New tribe started for Agnostics: tribes.tribe.net/agnosticsonly

Being certain is stupid, whereas exercising doubt and critical thinking is more intelligent. Agnosticism is simply about being skeptical. Skeptical Atheists are welcome, and we ask that all people be considerate and polite when posting. Labels matter little, it's what's going on between the ears that counts.

True skeptics are skeptical of skeptics, skepticism, and him/herself.

Admitting that you may be wrong shows strength of character. We're only human. The only people who don't make mistakes aren't doing anything at all.

Agnostics may have suspicions about social/scientific/spiritual concepts having more or less validity, but our trick is discussing such topics without an emotional investment in any particular outcome.

So, with an open mind, a warm heart, and a colorful sense of humor, we extend our invitation to anyone inclined towards the Agnostic point of view.

Angel Tech: 8-Circuit Brain Online, 3/16-5/10

MARCH 16 - MAY 10, 2009.
THIS IS AN INTERACTIVE ONLINE COURSE.

Based in the law of octaves and the Hindu Chakra System, The 8-Circuit Brain was revisioned as a system for intelligence increase by Timothy Leary ("Info-Psychology"), given socio-political context by Robert Anton Wilson ("Prometheus Rising") and expanded into practical applications for personal integration by Antero Alli ("Angel Tech"). The 8-Circuit Brain delineates eight interactive functions of Intelligence inherent within each of us at various degrees of latency and expression: (1) Physical, (2) Emotional, (3) Intellectual, (4) Social, (5) Somatic, (6) Psychic-Intuitive, (7) Mytho-Poetic and (8) Quantum Nonlocal intelligence.

This 8-week course is the result of a comprehensive study and practice of dynamic techniques capable of triggering actual results that can be measured, repeated and developed on your own. All eight circuits will be covered, as well as their specific internal supports and, the initiation into and out of Chapel Perilous. Once understood and redefined in your own terms, this eight circuit model can become an open-ended system for precision tracking and interpretation of signals within oneself, the world and beyond. If you are ready to test and nurture the existing conditions of your autonomy and integrity, while increasing your intelligence, this course may be for you.

In October 2008, I gave a talk on the 8-Circuit Brain in Portland at the ESOZONE conference. The talk lasted almost two hours and very recently the folks at ESOZONE were kind enough to post two 7-minutes excerpts onto YouTube:

devil

I have an interest in this because I am dealing with some schizoid delusions (or realities) involving the selling of my soul to the devil and subsequent damnation and the waiting for death so i can burn for all eternity. I am starting to learn about jung and reality tunnels as well as other form of spirituality like shamanism, egyptian meditiation, voudon palo, and lukumi and I am not sure if the voices i hear are real or not, or who they are. But I seem to have a conscious in my mind that tells me i have sold my soul and am damned and heading for hell. Sometimes he identifies himself as satan, many times he calls himself "me."

I have several theories as to why all this is happening. I have led up till recently a life containing a caustic family realtionship. I fought and argued with my brother and parents for many years and I am very ashamed of the evilI I have comitted verbally and in the uncontrolled use of my temper.

I now fear it is too late since this is what the voices tell me. I initially began having enormous dread in crowds and hearing a dark male voice telling me bad things about myself. this was under the influence of marijuana. At this time my family issues were not being adequately worked on and I was struggling in college.

Eventually, when high, the voice identified himself as the devil. One time, when high I sold him my soul and immediately knew that i was going to hell and going to burn for all time.

A lot of this might have to do with imprinting of religious ideas and projections. The actuall beings i hear may be thought complexes or personalities from my collective unconscious that have found my ego and like to intrude on it.

I have heard schizoid thought is a defense mechanism that is caused by stress and that this is my particular defense mechanism. I am convinced my family relationship and negative actions influenced this whole process.

I am wondering if you understand or can offer any insight into this. And if you can point me to any authors or thinkers or philosophies that could provide assistance.

I was wondering if this is my personal god or lower power, and is it evil and mean becauseI was evil and mean? OR is this the inner power that was in my since birth that has shaped my actions from the unconscious since birth. (I often think i am a demon, or was just born bad, and the voice often agrees that I am demonic or a bad seed)

In public i am distraught because I think I have connections with other lost souls who are also grimly awaiting merciless punishment in hell.

I also hear voices in public that make me think i am picking up other peoples thoughts but only if the thoughts have to do with my status as a damned soul, a person that "is finished" and that "nothing can be done for."

Well I just wanted to see if you could offer any advice.

thank you,

this excerpt is from mountain tao systems in china-thailand more than kalichakric tibetan-indian, but same general root ( i think)

from: "Cosmic Healing II" , at universaltao.com from Mantak Chia:

the solar system is an energy structure with nine major awareness belts, planets are materialized form of belts

each belt has unique frequencies and qualities.. the soul remains strongly connected to the sun.. two clearly distinguished forms of soul are discussed:

1) sun related cloud soul of hun
2) moon related white soul po

po half comes into being at birth, preceding emergence of hun

soul starts incarnation process by moving through world of stars attracted by solar system where sun acts as a giant satellite station between the world of stars and planets

karmic information carried by soul determines how long it will remain in different planets' frequencies.. these frequencies affecting our learning possibilities and distinctive character qualities

during this incarnation the soul moves from un-manifested world through the star world, external planets, internal planets, and moon earth sphere.. an electro-plasmic force of humanity around the earth functions as an awareness belt connecting the soul with life on earth

later info covers five star palaces and five cranial bones and the opening of the crystal room to star frequencies

***************************************************************************************************************************************************

so it's one thing to say, another to have subjective experience, and another to externalize as objective proof and technology...

but I think the point here (for anyone who cares to read), is this:

if birds can sense the planet's magnetic field and poles as well as each other in flight to coordinate and migrate vast distances via the metal in their pineal glands/root eye/third eyes also visible on any iguanas forehead

and the bardo thodol is thought to be systematic solar planetary magnetic fields..

then you are left with the idea of a human telepathic mental field where souls are essentially higher frequency light structures... whose dimension is attune-able to by humans in the same sense as the earths field is to aviaries..

or in other words souls are postulated as, at a minimum, interplanetary magnetic denizens whose field is attuneable

I've been doing some internet searches for it but can't find it. Anyone know where it can be located?

Antero AlliToday we are starting an exciting new series of conversations with an author, a ritualist, a film maker, a dramatist, and astrologer, and a theater director Antero Alli. These series of conversations are near and dear both to our hearts, and to the work that Antero does.

This series of conversations (3 so far to be published every week starting now) is on the topic called the 8 Circuit Brain model. It is something that Timothy Leary first brought into the western consciousness, and later Robert Anton Wilson in his book Prometheus Rising gave it a more wide spread appeal. It was further developed by Antero in his book “Angel Tech”

This conversation covers the following topics:

* History and introduction to the 8-circuit brain model
* Absorb, Integrate, Transmit: Intelligence Increase
* Embracing humility, flaws & paradox on the human journey
* Circuit 1: Bio-Survival intelligence
* Circuit 2: Emotional-Territorial intelligence
* Direct experience
* Meeting the needs of the second circuit

two more podcasts to come, over the next two sundays

Hi All,

I just posted this as a listing in this tribe and then realised that most people (including myself) don't even see the listings, haha..
So here it is again:

I have just finished a micro site to support my first book which I am currently putting together and you are cordially invited to have a look, create a profile and get involved. The general purpose of my book is to provide the tools/ideas necessary to catalyse a shift in perspective on a global level, such that we can literally create heaven.

Sounds pretentious right? Impossible? Not to me.

The web address for the informational site is http://www.infiniteeureka.com and the social network is at http://infiniteeureka.ning.com .

I look forward to reading your comments, criticisms, ideas and whatever else you want to write. Feel free to say whatever you like, that's the whole point!

Still here? What are you waiting for? hehe..

8)

Peacefully and with love to all,

ANGEL TECH course starts March 3 at MLA

I have been working with the 8-Circuit Brain model for intelligence increase since 1980 and a couple years ago, I started teaching an online course in this process. It's based on my 1987 book, ANGEL TECH. The next version of my 8-week intensive course starts March 3rd.

This is a hands-on experiential approach that emphasizes safe activation of the circuits in real time through meditations, rituals, exercises, tasks and writing down the results in your lab book. A "circuit" is a term for a specific level of consciousness with its own function of intelligence. The eight "circuits", or functions of intelligence" are: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Somatic, Psychic, Mytho-poetic, and Quantum.

The course introduces all new material previously unpublished in Angel Tech using private web pages designed especially for this course. Includes ongong one-to-one feedback with myself plus interactive group forums at Maybe Logic Academy where the course is presented. If anyone has any questions or comments about this course, feel free to air them here.

Intra-8-Circuit Inhibitors

Does anyone here have an opinion on whether certain (any) circuits within the 8-circuit model can, because of activation, inhibit the activation of other ciruits? Based simply on the nature of neuro-structure/-function and my opinion (though seemingly with a good deal of evidence) that the 8-circuit model has quite a strong neurological parallel (eg. is an appropriate model of consciousness), I'm feel as though there must be some inhibitions upon activation.

The brain does it all the time with neurons (ex. purkinje cells are inhibitory neurons in the cerebellum, responsible for very fine (thusly filtered (inhibited) motor movements)).

Anyway, what do you guys think?

What did Leary say? Wilson? I feel like Wilson said that he thought circuit high (ha... haha...) circuit 5 activation prevents circuit 6 or 7 activation. Maybe it was 6 to 7 and 8. I don't remember or remember where I read or heard that (an interview perhaps).

-Peace.

metaprogram yourself to save society

i posted this blog and started a bit of discussion on the topic last friday. lots of discussion followed. comments are still trickling in. would love to hear your opinions! (on the blog or here or both)

http://people.tribe.net/wtsn/blog/d4496a25-6910-4193-98a8-7cc29022886f

i wrote this in response to a post by a most observant and thoughtful friend, Stephen ("Dr. Trix"), addressing an unfortunate trend seen by many in "the scene" (i.e. dance music community) in the bay area: an increasingly separatist class structure emerging out of a once united and mutually respectful community. but my thoughts here have dug a bit deeper than originally expected and touched upon a pretty personal nerve. as something i care about rather strongly, i'm writing to share with my circle of friends. i would care very much to hear your thoughts, regardless of whether you agree with me...

my thanks goes out to stephen for inspiring me to explicate my thoughts and for broaching the subject of his post to start with. you can read that original post here: people.tribe.net/trix/blog...4bb0008beb

...

there is fortunately a somewhat effective antidote to escaping the social elitism that you describe, stephen. it's something which will do wonders to clear up more than just this societal level symptom and something which i think is available to us all if we want it.

here are some goals you've hit upon in this post which i believe that most of us have in our lives:
*a sense of appreciation from others.
*a sense of respect from others.
*freedom from being judged negatively.
*freedom from judging.

and, at least in my mind, this is the greatest obstacle to acheiving all of these goals simultaneously: in order to be appreciated and respected, we feel pressure to conform to what we perceive as a collectively valued appearance and behaviour. within our culture(s) and -- in my experience -- most culture, that behavior includes judgement. you judge as an act of participating in a protocol, because those who demand your respect judge you and others. you also judge because by emphasizing someones faults tips the respect game in your favor. judge them (and gain third parties' concurrences) before they can judge you.

so in order to achieve the first two points above we are basically pushed toward violating the the second two. according to my observations, the first two goals will win out most of the time. we continue to seek respect and appreciation by the means presented to us, at the expense of participating in the judgement game.

an important question emerges: is there a way to avoid receiving and giving judgement while still eliciting respect/appreciation?

i think there is: cultivate independence. that is in the sense of "the freedom from being conditioned by your environment". this is a matter of deprioritizing the 3rd goal ("freedom from being judged") in favor of one which is worded quite similarly: "psychological freedom from being judged". this moves the power of the action from externally directed (by someone who is potentially judging you) to internal.

of course this is so much easier to say than to do. the habits which keep us locked into being conditioned by our environment are substantial. and self-reinforced by years of repetition. i know well from personal experience.

but if we are able to cultivate the will power and awareness within us to make this transition of priorities, half the battle is won. independence feels good. and, as it turns out, is also sexy. a sense of independence is a catalyst for increased self esteem. self esteem leads to confidence and that attractive glow we all seek.

this is also a self-reinforcing mode of being and i believe there's probably a tipping point at which it becomes more natural to feel independent and largely refrain from judgement than to default toward the norm.

i'd like to write more on this when i have more time. i see this as an extremely significant topic with many intricately related and subtle phenomena (society and mind are complex!). accordingly, cultivation of independence has become one of my most important projects over the last couple of years. before this gets to long however, i will close with just one proactive observation: the single best thing i've found to cultivate independence is a dedicated and regular practice of mindfulness meditation. meditation breeds awareness and peels away susceptibility to conditioning. i would recommend it to anyone...

Can We Replace Ancient Uses Of Somnambulism To Re find Those Uses?

Since the crusades of the last millenim, even a millenium before that, the trend of the expanding civilization was to destroy those with the natural skills of spiritual hypnosis. Telepathic induction of deep hypnotic states is the ultimate metaprogramming tool but it is exclusively unconsciously controlled, most often. And, since the natural skills have been hnted down and destroyed, renered unconscious in secret hiding, how shall we ever recover them to serve love, life, knowledge and evolution?

I am a researcher of the potentials of unconscious programming direct to the unconscious by the uses of hypnosis assisted with nitrous oxide. A major revision to the tried and true methods over 100 years old have been developed and tested. I'm an advocate of this treatment being used to treat alcoholism and drug addiction. I mean those people don't want to kill themselves, but they will.

With these new methods the same basic results as working with somanmbulistic subjects can be attained.

I've discovered that the Maslowian hierarchy of values can be woven into conditional post hypnotic programming that compels a person toward powerful re motivation and finding new control over themselves through others that learn about the inner problems and then exploit primordial instincts to re structure behaviors with knowledge from the deep unconscious.

I have actually found some assistance from a local municipalities mental health hospital, for awhile, which was consistent with California state law, Health and Saftey core 1370.4, then the Santa Barbara County Surpevisors stopped all interaction.

http://algoxy.com/psych/psyimages/confirmsbcomh.jpg

I never recieved the answer promised in that letter.

Prior to that the County had failed to appear on a subpoena in a civil action against them for neglect, failure to preserve records. The subpoenaed information would have proven over 1,000 insantiy actions of the local courts are missing fro man event over 125 years old. A major instance of unconscious programming that went way too far, but considering why, perhaps not. Look where our unconscious world is now after 9-11.

The idea is to help those that are really on the edege. then oce it is seen how well this works, help those with less harrowing disorders of the unconscious and perhaps in the process find some of those that have the natural skills and retrain them.

Any interested in this return to the function of working direct with the unconscious and meta programming please contact me.

I am starting a new tribe dedicated to the continuing education of the 8-Circuit Brain theory as developed by Timothy Leary ("Info-Psychology"), Robert Anton Wilson ("Prometheus Rising") and myself, Antero Alli ("Angel Tech"). As moderator, I will assist members towards a deeper personal understanding and application of the 8-Circuit Brain model to real life circumstances, rather than any pursuit of speculation, cross-referencing with other systems and over-thinking in general. ANGEL TECH will also host past, present and future students enrolled in the 8-Circuit Brain course of study that i teach at Maybe Logic Academy (www.maybelogic.net).

ANGEL TECH will emphasize process over content, meaning, if you are just seeking more content for the sake of increasing information alone, you may be better off without this tribe. However, if you are excited or motivated by the possibility of participating in a more hands-on testing of the 8-Circuit Brain model beyond your armchair, I would like to dialogue with you (see link below)

Book on brain change that I wrote with C.S. Hyatt, Phd

Back in 1988, I wrote a book with the infamous Christopher S. Hyatt, PhD called, "Modern Shaman's Guide to a Pregnant Universe", which stayed in print for a few years and then disappeared. That happens a lot in the high stakes publishing world. What doesn't happen nearly as often is when a book gets brought back into print many years later and yesterday, I received a box of my "author's copies" of the new 2006 edition of Pregnant Universe.

For those who do not know about Dr. Hyatt, he is one of the chief heads of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a brilliant psychologist and author of numerous books. He is also a very funny and very dangerous man (read his books to know what I mean).

What is this book about ?!

It's about how words act as drugs and how you can access and trigger various trances and states of consciousness through creative arrangement of how words are used. It's not NLP or a newage self-help book; it's honestly unlike any other book I've read. It's also very funny and entertaining. To give you an idea of its outrageous sense of humor, check out this link to these application forms for hiring new gods (and firing old useless ones):

http://www.newfalcon.com/excerpts/modern_shaman_e.htm

I have a limited supply. If you want a signed copy, they are $18 (postpaid) payable to: Antero Alli, PO Box 7518, Berkeley CA 94707 (add $5. for overseas airmail). Sorry no credit cards or paypal on this one.

Leary's 8-Circuit Brain Course at Maybe Logic Acadmey

As the author of ANGEL TECH (New Falcon; 1987), I have been working with Leary's 8-Circuit Brain model for Intelligence Increase for twenty years but only privately, that is, until now. A rare opportunity has opened a door at Robert Anoton Wilson's MAYBE LOGIC ACADEMY for me to teach an 8-week course on The 8-Circuit Brain in Theory and Practice starting in mid-March.

The link below goes to the course prospectus that outlines the structure and content of what will be covered. Once you get on the site, you can find other courses and teachers to choose from, as well. My approach will be very hands-on, about 70% praxis and 30% theory and reading, opening many possibilities for direct experience of these "centers" in the body/heart/mind continuum.

Hope to see you there!

a personal brush with atemporal reality

So, last night, while on a fair amount of LSD, I have 4 or 5 of my previous Salvia trips spread out to me in perfect synchronicity, which is to say that the very images and concepts which constitute the bulk of the information passed through the salvia trip were put in linear and understandable order by the fabric of causal reality in such a way as to totally shatter my previous conceptions of what time was. Which is to say that, until last night, I was unaware that most of what I considered truth or fact is based on a flawed understanding on context and time. I'm sure I'm not free of that illusion still, but there's definitely movement.

mushrooms and imprinting

hello, i just discovered this whole tribe thing a few days ago and have been enjoying it very much...

i'm have been curious about some of my experiences...

where i grew up and started experimenting, lsd was really all there was around in my circle. i fell deeply in love with it, ending up going on a journey once or twice a week for few years. i finally moved away and mushrooms became available to me. before my first experience i must say i was a bit arrogant, not respecting the mushroom. i thought because of my experience with acid that i could handle a large dose of mushrooms without a problem. i was in for a huge surprise. i took a seven grams with five or six other people eating an three or four. after forty five minutes or so i left, getting rather freaked out. i made it back to my apartment and reality quickly disappeared. i laid in the dark being totally overwhelmed by patterns and colors, scared. i began to feel like i was going to die. i started thinking about going to the hospital. luckily i called one of my friends from back home who i tripped with most often. he talked me out of what probably would have been a horrifying experience. i can't imagine what would have happened at the hospital! then something amazing started to happen. i don't know if it was from talking to him and becoming a bit more grounded in reality or if a different part of the trip was setting in, the patterns, the thoughts, the chaos become more ordered. i started seeing/feeling good and evil, separated, in something like a double helix coming together and pulling apart. good and evil were fighting it out in my head space and i would live or die on the outcome. although at this point i was no longer afraid. i was totally amazed by what i was watching. eventually good was able to hold on and reality started coming back to me. i left my apartment, feeling amazing, energized and so much love for everyone, for the world around me. i walked around looking at shop windows and riding the bus around town. totally amazing life changing experience. i have never been so sure in my life that i was going to die.

is this feeling of death the point where imprinting becomes possible? i wish i had discovered these idea's when i was heavily using psychedelics. i wonder what damage i have done by imprints during bad trips. there are a few things i think i can trace that have haunted me for years, but i have slowly been removing many of these imprints, mostly through meditation and the works of leary, wilson, and alli.

i'm kind of losing my focus here, but i am fascinated by this feeling of death i felt. in my mushroom journeys since i haven't gone back to the seven grams, but would like to one day after i learn much more. often when eating three or four grams reality still disappears. at some point things begin to make sense again and i feel as if i have to start learning everything again, like using a light switch and realizing it turns on a light! : )

is this also a point for imprinting? it seems like an amazing opportunity to do some real brain change.

thanks for any insight...

the sexual imprint

To me, the word "imprint" refers to how and when we are acted on for the very first time in a profound enough way to dictate a pattern for years to come. Whether the first sexual imprint happens in solo masturbation or in mutual intercourse with another is a matter of debate. In my opinion, I think it is with sexual intercourse and I'll tell you why.

Take the first biological "safety vs. danger" imprint we all experience as an infant. Does it occur in the womb or in conjunction with the mother soon after we are born? I think the latter. Though we are all, for the most part, totally safe in the womb this does not and cannot assure anyone of a lifetime's confidence in the experience of safety. That assurance, or lack thereof, comes as the result of the mother/infant imprint during lactation, whether we were breastfed and the kind of physical and emotional environment we were born into.

Back to sex. The physical and emotional environment that accompanied our first intercourse orgasm sets a tone of conditions necessary for sexual arousal, satisfaction and pleasure. Ask yourself what the existing conditions were during that time and it may provide clues about the nature of your own sexual imprint.

If, for example, a sense of danger or fear accompanied the first sexual imprint then, conditions of danger or fear may be necessary for arousal. This does not mean that danger or fear are necessarily healthy conditions or those that you wsih to continue serving but that the sexual imprint is impersonal and continues as such until it is changed.

To change a sexual imprint is difficult but not impossible. It requires a period of abstinence from orgasm of any kind for at least thirty days, or one full lunar cycle. Sometimes it requires more time. Then, it requires experimentation with different conditions and settings, the ones you find more acceptable for reasons of your own. Remember, you can't fool or trick or force a new sexual imprint; eros is wise as a serpent.

There must be sustained celebacy to allow the old patterns and conditions to surface and then be denied so, that over time, they have no choice but to wither away. The slate must be cleaned, so to speak, before a new setting can be introduced and even then, there can be no forcing unless you wish "forcing" to be part of your new sexual imprint (not reccomended).

The deeper the blank slate, the deeper the imprint. Deepening the blank slate can occur through daily meditation throughout the celebacy or, if you can be very conscientious, with the assistance of psychoactive agents.

The first step, however, is identifying precisely what the initial conditions were surrounding your first sexual imprint. This critical knowledge will help you tell the difference between repeating yourself and serving something new.

Anyone else out there in Metaprogrammingland have anything to add to or question about the nature of the sexual imprint ?

"Meditation may increase grey matter in parts of the brain important for sensory, cognitive and emotional processing, according to a new study.

The study, by researchers from Yale, Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, shows a link between meditation and increased cortical thickness.

Reported in the journal NeuroReport, the study involved 20 participants with extensive training in Buddhist Insight meditation. "

His topic is now "A New Elixir" and will be about Pachycereus pringlei, a newly discovered entheogenic cactus. The talk will be accompanied by slides of cave paintings showing the sacramental use of this species.
10/29/05 • 10pm - 7am

• A modern Samhain celebration •

In pagan times, Samhain was the most sacred night on the calendar, signifying the beginning of winter and the start of a new year. It was one last celebration before winter set in - a time of new beginnings, the seed whispering under the soil. This was the night on which the Great Veil thinned, letting spirits, monsters, and faeries walk the Earth. Mortals wore costumes, and danced the night away around a bonfire, lest they be spotted and spirited away, never to be seen again.

Then the religions of fear came, and Samhain was turned into a pale shadow of its former self. What once had been of a celebration of life and rebirth became a festival of the dead. Now we intend to take this sacred night back and restore it to what it once was, with a few modern updates.

We may have replaced the traditional bonfire and drums for blacklights and a sound system, but the underlying ritual is the same. Come and cleanse your soul, move your body, and welcome in winter from the dance floor.

Gregory Bateson: Q: What is the difference that makes a difference?

A: Make a small, ordinary different thing signify a large difference by LAYERING other small, ordinary differences.

Technique:

1. Pinpoint a desired change. Put it into a simple solution statement, attractive to your ego. For example "I want to love being fit and healthy."

23. As you form this statement into memorable words, finding a clear state of gently holding the statement, allow yourself to say it out loud, if it gives you more pleasure in a prayerful whisper, or if you love it out louder.

24. In the state of the previous steps, get up and go and do any of the following

- Close or open the toilet seat.
- Wash a cup.
- Put on or take off shoes.
- Brush hair.
- Sit quietly paying attention to your breath.

Or any ordinary everyday action for you. Ordinariness and everydayness is PARAMOUNT. It MUST be everyday and ordinary, this must be emphasised.

In other words, just do it.

25. Whilst simply doing the ordinary activity, or immediately afterwards, do something very small but different. Do whatever arises from the sense of difference itself, whether it is clap your hands, or move your body in a direction, or speaking a new or unintelligible word. Then...

26. Notice...

- The quality of attending around the ordinary action.
- The quality of the attention around the not-so-ordinary action.
- The sense of difference that arises.

27. Return to where you've written the desired change down and attend to it again from within this sense of difference. Simply attend to it however is ordinary for you. Allow the sense of difference to dissipate gradually as your attention settles onto the ordinary sameness of your normal awareness.

28. As you go about whatever flourishes and prospers in your daily life, imagine in the room where this occurs that this difference within sameness unfolds. Imagine in a room where you have sex this unfolds. Imagine in a room where you eat or cook this unfolds. Make sure you release the light or heavy quality of awareness that forms differently around each context that you generalise this newness into. God is in the context, so allow each to be what it is with relaxed self-requirement.

29. Notice (or not) change unfold.

Explanation:
This experiment triggers different sustainable behavior without the stringency and stresses of dealing directly with egotism. It also cultivates sensitivity and caring at the roots of experience, rather than philosophically and intellectually. As such, it forms a methodology of apprenticeship to the actual environment of local perceptions, and thus is not for the faint-hearted.

Please post results on this thread and further experiments arising.

Warm regards, and happy metaprogramming,

Paul Bard.

28 days to form a habit?

Hello,

am in the midst of working on a personal development program and am investigating the changing of habits. At some point I heard or read that in order for a habit to "sink in" and become adopted, it requires repetition over a course of 28 days. Have no idea where I got that from or if there is any validity to it.

Was wondering if anyone out there had any good research or suggestions in regard to the duration of habit formation?

Thank you!

The Center for Consciousness Studies at The University of Arizona is
Pleased to announce a summer WebCourse on the modern science of
consciousness. It is intended to be the first of a series of courses
aimed at bringing consciousness and its sister issues back into the
general college curriculum.

"Consciousness: The WebCourse" is designed for college students,
professionals, scientists, philosophers and others interested in this
field.

This thirteen-week course will use the University of Arizona D2L web
education platform. The course is non-credit, but a Certificate of
Completion will be awarded.

Syllabus, registration and other information may be found at
http://consciousness.arizona.edu/webcourse.htm

Course Description

We can explore our own consciousness (First Person); empathize with
others (Second Person); and look at conscious beings from the outside
(Third Person). These three philosophical perspectives organize our
course. Weekly Phenomenology Labs will adopt the First Person
perspective, using personal consciousness diaries and psychological
demonstrations. Our lectures will focus on new scientific findings
about vision, emotional feelings, mental effort, volition and the
unconscious. The Second Person emerges in ethical relations to
others, interpersonal experiences, and a new understanding
of the brain regions of mother-baby attachment. Discussion Groups will
encourage participants to engage with the course leaders and with each
other.

The three basic perspectives can be understood in the framework of
Global Workspace Theory, a well-known scientific approach to
consciousness. Other theoretical views will also be included. We will
not settle the philosophical question "What is consciousness?" but we
can acquire a better understanding of consciousness in modern
psychology, brain science and the wisdom traditions.

We hope this Web Course will be exciting, fun and especially, thought-
provoking.
Medical/scientific visualisation research

Hello All,

I study a History and Philosophy of Science subject. I intend to write my final essay on scientific investigation into the benefits of visualisation exercises.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that stroke patients benefit from similar visualisation exercises to those used by professional athletes. A Melbourne University report in the Department of Engineering also correllated trainable visualisation abilities to exam results.

Science as a community, however, seems notoriously shy about following up on such reports. For instance, everyone wants stroke patients to recover as quickly as possible, yet hardly anyone paid attention when research connected recovery rates to a regime of visualisation tasks. Not even any back-up research to get a larger sample size. This seems odd when you consider the low cost and potential benefits associated with such experiments.

Could anyone please point me towards other articles and research papers that investigate the benefits of visualisation tasks? Investigation into similar intrapersonal disciplines such as meditation, yoga, tai-chi, or even artistic expression might also prove valuable. The more scientific (in other words, thorough and non-anecdotal) the better.

Thankyou in advance,

Tim Rice

Self-hypnosis

Hello,

I have recently started experimenting with self-hypnosis. I use progressive relaxation followed by a deepening procedure that involves counting backwards from one-hundred. (I will try other numbers, as this takes too long, for too little benefit.)

I have initially planted suggestions to help me go into deeper and more suggestible states next time, especially tied to a particular asana, a mudra or two, etc. So far, some success but nothing formidable.

Does anyone know of any other techniques that could usefully modify or add to this regime?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Just before being invited to join this forum I was reading an AP article concerning mathematical "templating" to identify various charactor traits. The article mentioned John Forbes Nash, mathematician and expert in "Games Theory", who is the individual that the film "A Beautiful Mind" was based on.

Anyway, the subject under consideration in this forum is vast and mostly not well understood. I look forward to where the discussions may lead us.
